Robot poets

It was National Poetry Day on 7 October. A celebration of all things poetic – not just writing it but reading it. You’ve probably got a favourite poem; something learned at school or that you came across and resonates with you on a deeper level. How do you feel about poetry written by a computer? The UK’s contribution to Expo 2020 Dubai is the Poem Pavilion which uses advanced machine learning algorithms to transform the input of visitors into collective poems. And these poems then get projected onto the façade of the building, turning the pavilion into an exhibit itself. Can machines ‘write’ poetry? Well, the Poem Pavilion is all about celebrating cultural diversity and collaboration. Who are we to say a machine can’t contribute to the poetic world?
